As they slid down the cliff, Isi reached out and snagged a root sticking out of the wall. She was ripped from Lyelâs back but held onto the root to break their fall. He tumbled farther but grabbed onto her ankle before plunging to the bottom.
Close! Sheâd come very close to losing him.
âYou okay?â she asked, her breathing jerky. The strain on her body was immense. He was no puny, five-footer, but a big, tall alien. She wouldnât be able to hold him for long.
âYes. Are you oâ¦key. Is that a word, okey?â
She released a rough laugh. âOnly if you use it with dokey.â
âI do not know what a dokey is. Or an okey. But I am all right. I see a fang projecting from the cliff face directly below me and will let go and drop down to it. Dokey okey?â
âDokey okey.â She swiped the tears of relief from her eyes and sniffed. What if he kept falling? Losing him wouldâveâ
He let go of her ankle, and she watched as he slid down the wall, easily latching onto the fang. Pulling himself up onto itâsomething she could never do in gym class or anywhere elseâhe balanced on the projection, lifting his arms toward her. âLet go and join me, mate.â
âMate, huh?â Her smile made it clear she teased.
âMate.â Pure satisfaction rang in his voice. âWe are going to be friends with many benefits.â
Her skin shouldnât tingle. Not here in this dangerous place. But there it was. Love came at you no matter where you might be. It didnât wait for the perfect opportunity. And thatâs what this was, love. Sheâd never been a fan of insta-anything except her instapot, but how could she not fall for Lyel? When she fled Earth, she hadnât expected to meet someone special, but Lyel was everything she could ever hope for in a guy. A mate. LOL. Who wouldâve thought sheâd end up falling for an alien?
âLetâs renegotiate our deal when we reach the bottom and have finished kicking unknown creature butts, dokey okey?â she said.
âDokey okey.â
âIâm letting go now.â She closed her eyes and released the branch. Her body glided down the surface, into Lyelâs waiting arms.
âI have you,â he said gruffly against her throat. He nipped her skin, and her tingles went haywire, zipping around inside her like tiny lightning bolts.
âYou do have me.â Man, did he ever. Now wasnât the time for sharing her feelings, but she could take a second for a quick kiss, right?
Wrapping her arms around his shoulders and her legs around his waist, she placed her lips on his. He groaned and pulled her against him, secure, safe, and set aflame. His tongue teased across the seam of her lips, and she opened, letting him in. She clung, taking all he had to give.
When she lifted her head, he bared his fangs. âIsi.â The satisfaction in his voice made her want to cling to him forever. And she would, sorta. Sheâd hold on as long as he wanted her.
